As the sunny days of summer continue in Perth, many of us are turning our attention to our outdoor spaces. Whether it’s family gatherings, weekend barbecues, or simply enjoying the warm evenings, creating a functional and stylish outdoor area can make all the difference.

Doug recently sat down with Vance Thompson from Thompson Designs during Table Talk. They explored the latest trends in outdoor entertainment spaces and shared tips for making your backyard both practical and beautiful.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living

“One of the biggest trends we’re seeing,” Vance explains, “is a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor areas. Large alfresco spaces that connect directly to kitchens or dining rooms make entertaining so much easier.”

Vance highlights the practical side of modern design: “Stackable sliding doors are a fantastic choice. They’re easier to install and more energy-efficient than bi-fold doors, and they make moving between indoor and outdoor spaces effortless.”

He also recommends servery windows for functional entertaining: “These upward-opening windows allow you to pass food and drinks straight from the kitchen to your outdoor area. It’s simple, convenient, and really brings the spaces together.”

Practical and Stylish Outdoor Design

When it comes to landscaping, Vance says homeowners are focusing on low-maintenance options: “Smooth stone or polished concrete surfaces combined with raised garden beds are really popular. They look great and are much easier to maintain than large lawns.”

He adds that Perth’s climate is perfect for water-wise gardens: “We’re seeing a lot of Palm Springs-style gardens with succulents and cacti. They’re stylish, practical, and perfect for the Perth summer.”

Wellness and Relaxation Zones

Outdoor spaces are no longer just for entertaining, they’re for creating a retreat at home. “People want their backyard to be a personal getaway,” Vance says. “Plunge pools, outdoor spas, and even small wellness zones like saunas are becoming really popular. Even just a lounge area under some shade can make a huge difference.”

Smart Additions and Technology

For those looking to elevate their backyard, Vance notes: “Integrated lighting and sound systems are trending in high-end designs. They’re not essential, but they make your outdoor space stylish and functional for summer evenings with family and friends.”

Building Regulations and Permits

Vance reminds homeowners to stay safe and compliant: “Retaining walls over 500mm, pergolas over 20 square metres, and patios over 10 square metres all require building permits. Pools and permanent spas have strict regulations, including fencing. It’s always best to check with your local council before starting a project.”

Start Planning Your Summer Space

“Now is the perfect time to plan your summer entertainment area,” Vance encourages. “Whether it’s a small courtyard or a large backyard, combining style, practicality, and a touch of personal flair will create a space ready for family, friends, and those long Perth summer evenings.”
