Mel Phillips recently joined Doug on Table Talk, sharing her journey since receiving an ADHD diagnosis at the age of 45. Mel says the diagnosis didn’t just change her – it ignited a mission of compassion, creativity, and faith… of embracing ADHD and inspiring children with it to shine!
“The moment actually was life-changing,” Mel said. “It helped me understand myself in a new light. It gave me the language for things I’ve struggled with my entire life.”
Her clarity also exposed a bigger issue though – the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding ADHD, especially for children. “That realisation fuelled my passion to create a world where every child knows they are wonderfully made and seen by God,” she explained.
From Diagnosis to Action
While educating others about ADHD for her work, Mel recognized familiar patterns in herself. “Through teaching, I saw traits in me,” she said. “It took courage because I felt shame and judgment – mostly from myself. But once I spoke to my doctor, it hit me like a bombshell.”
She combined lifestyle changes, practical tools, and medication to reclaim control over her life. “Medication helped, but it’s not a silver bullet,” she said. “You need diet, sleep, and tools to design your life the way you want it.”
This transformation inspired The Wonderfully Made World children’s book series – a collection born from the Scripture, “You are fearfully and wonderfully made.”
“I wanted to shine a light in the darkness around ADHD,” Mel said. “There was so much negativity. I wanted to create stories that affirm, uplift, and educate while reflecting Christian values.”
Creativity Without Limits
Since starting the series, Mel has written five books, publishing three so far, with more underway. “It’s been less than a 12-month process – it’s blown me away,” she said. “I’ve embraced who I am. I’ve stopped masking. My differences aren’t deficiencies, they’re gifts from God.”
Her illustrator, Cameron Jones, shares the same vision. “He has his own family story with ADHD, so he really gets it. We’ve known each other for 25 years, and this journey has been incredible.”
Inspiring Change and Conversation
Mel’s mission goes beyond books. “I want to build a movement that brings compassion, understanding, and faith into conversations about ADHD,” she said. “It can be a lonely place. People assume things, so don’t assume. Ask questions, educate yourself, and show compassion. Together, we can create a more accepting world.”
And the creativity doesn’t stop there. “I have some wacky ADHD ideas brewing, so watch this space!” she laughed.
