Pastor Brian Harris from the Avenir Leadership Institute joined Bec and Asa to talk about a story of healing and what it really teaches us about faith.

The story comes from 2 Kings chapter 5, where a powerful man named Naaman, commander of an enemy army, is struck with leprosy. Despite being an outsider, God chooses to heal him but in a way that challenges his pride.

“The passage challenges us about our preconceptions,” Brian said. “Naaman gets healed, and that alone surprises us.”

Healing starts with humility

Naaman’s story begins with an unlikely helper a young Israelite servant girl. After being taken captive during war, she still chooses kindness. She tells Naaman that there’s a prophet in Israel who could heal him.

“It’s remarkable what that young girl does,” Brian explained. “She could have been bitter. Instead, she blesses others even in her own hardship.”

When Naaman visits the prophet Elisha, he expects a grand ritual. Instead, Elisha simply sends a messenger with an easy instruction: go wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River.

Naaman is furious. The command seems too simple, even insulting for someone of his status.

“Sometimes we’re willing to do things if they’re really hard,” Brian said. “But we ignore the simple things that actually work.”

Eventually, Naaman humbles himself, follows the prophet’s direction, and is healed.

Don’t make faith harder than it is

Even after his healing, Naaman complicates things again. He tries to offer Elisha gifts and worries about what to do when he returns home, where he must still bow in his king’s temple.

Elisha’s response is surprising. He doesn’t scold Naaman or demand perfection.

“He simply says, ‘Go in peace,’” Brian said. “It’s as if he’s saying, you’re a new believer, take it step by step. Don’t overcomplicate it.”

A reminder to trust, not overthink

While the story began as one about healing, it ends with a powerful truth: faith doesn’t need to be complicated.

“Naaman had only believed for maybe 37 minutes,” Brian joked. “And he’s already trying to solve every problem that lies ahead.”

Brian says that’s a lesson for all of us. “Go in peace,” he said. “Let God guide you step by step.”

Sometimes, the simplest obedience and the willingness to trust is where true healing begins.
