Exploring India is like stepping into a world of contrasts. Bustling cities, serene mountains, golden deserts, and pristine coastlines. David Smyth from Forward Travel shares insights on planning the perfect Indian adventure.
How Long Should You Spend in India?
India is vast. “India is just under half the size of Australia,” David explains. “A short trip should be at least two weeks to get an introduction to the country.”
Two weeks allows travellers to experience Rajasthan, known for its desert landscapes, vibrant culture, and historic forts if you want to explore both the north and south, plan for at least four weeks.
The Ideal Two-Week Itinerary
For first-time travellers, David recommends Rajasthan. “Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Jodhpur with a stop in Mumbai makes a great route,” he says.
Rajasthan offers:
- The Taj Mahal – A must-see wonder.
- Ranthambore National Park – A chance to see tigers in the wild.
- Vibrant culture – Traditional clothing, bustling markets, and historic forts.
“It’s well set up for tourists and relatively easy to travel,” David adds.
How to Get Around
India has an extensive transport network. “If you’re short on time, flying between major regions is best,” David says.
For those looking to immerse themselves in local culture, trains are a great option. “India moves about 23 million people a day on its rail network! An overnight train is an experience in itself.”
Tuk-tuks are perfect for navigating cities like Delhi and Mumbai. “They’re cheap and efficient for short trips.”
Food and Hygiene Tips
A common concern for travellers is food safety. “India has some of the best food in the world,” David says. “If you’re staying in hotels, food is cooked to a high standard.”
For street food lovers, he offers a caution: “Be mindful of where you eat. Stick to busy vendors with high turnover.”
Hygiene is key. “With 1.2 billion people, cleanliness is important. Always wash your hands.”
Finding Space in a Crowded Country
India is the world’s most densely populated country. “You’ll always be around people in cities like Mumbai and Delhi,” David says. However, there are places to find peace.
“The Himalayan region offers serene escapes. National parks provide greenery and quiet. Once you get outside city centres, there’s a sense of space.”
Must-See Attractions Beyond the Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is iconic, but India has countless other gems:
- Jaipur’s Amber Fort – A breathtaking hilltop palace.
- Varanasi – Experience the spiritual heart of India on the Ganges River.
- Kerala’s Backwaters – Tranquil waterways with lush scenery.
