When it comes to faith, many people think the most important question is whether or not you believe in Jesus. But according to Pastor Ken Lee from Nations Church, it’s just as important to ask what you believe about Jesus.
That’s the thought Pastor Ken shared on Ask A Pastor with Bec and Asa this week – and it’s a question that can completely reshape how we see faith, relationships, and even life itself.
Believing in Jesus vs. Believing about Jesus
Pastor Ken began by explaining that it’s one thing to believe Jesus exists, and another to understand who He truly is. “It’s not hard to believe I exist,” he said. “You’re hearing my voice. But what you believe about me determines whether you’ll keep listening. It’s the same with Jesus.”
He explained that our relationships – whether with people or with God – are shaped by what we believe about the other person. If we believe someone is unkind or untrustworthy, that belief colours our experience of them.
“It’s the same principle with Jesus,” Pastor Ken said. “The first step is believing in Him, but the next, and most vital, step is believing rightly about Him.”
According to Pastor Ken, that means believing that Jesus is who He said He is – God in human form – who came to earth, lived without sin, and was crucified to bring freedom and restoration to anyone who believes in Him.
From Facts to Faith
When asked about the difference between knowing facts about Jesus and actually having a relationship with Him, Pastor Ken shared a simple but powerful distinction.
“A relationship with Jesus is deeply personal,” he said. “It’s not just an intellectual concept, it’s a heart connection. It requires faith to believe that He truly is God who walked among us.”
Faith, he added, is more than head knowledge – it’s choosing to trust Jesus’ character and promises.
Starting the Journey
So, what if you’re not sure what you believe about Jesus? Pastor Ken encouraged anyone exploring faith to start by seeking out truth directly from the Bible, and from people who know it well.
“Jesus is the living Word described in the written Word,” he said. “If you’re curious, sit down with someone who’s read the Bible and say, ‘Tell me about this Jesus.’”
He acknowledged that misconceptions can easily get in the way. They shape whether we see Jesus as judgmental, distant, or just a historical figure. But, as Pastor Ken explained, the truth of who Jesus is can be life-changing.
“What we believe about Jesus is that He is God Himself, who came in human form so He could relate to us,” he said. “He died on the cross to take on all our sin and guilt, offering abundant life here on earth, and eternal life beyond it.”
A Faith Proven True
Now in his fifties, Pastor Ken reflected on how his own beliefs about Jesus have been confirmed through experience.
“Over the years, what I’ve believed about Jesus has proven to be true,” he shared. “He’s loving, kind, merciful, and full of compassion. He’s saved me from so much torment. He’s ever-present in pain, grief, and chaos. He truly is the Prince of Peace.”
Why It All Matters
At the end of the conversation, Bec and Asa summed it up simply: what we believe about Jesus really does matter.
Because our beliefs shape how we relate – not just to others, but to the God who made us. And as Pastor Ken reminded listeners, when we believe rightly about Jesus, we find not just faith, but freedom, peace, and connection that lasts.
