Thinking about a trip to Argentina? We sat down with David Smyth from Forward Travel to get the inside scoop on this vibrant South American gem. From the cost of travel to must-see places and local cuisine, here’s everything you need to know.
Watch the Aussie Dollar
Before packing your bags, it’s worth checking the exchange rate.
David explains, “Most travel costs are priced in US dollars, so the exchange rate has a big impact. Right now, the Australian dollar is sitting at about 0.60 against the US dollar.”
That’s not great news for big trips.
“It can make your travel 10 to 15 percent more expensive compared to last year,” David adds. If you’re eyeing South America, Europe or Africa, it’s something to keep in mind.
Tip: When the Aussie dollar is strong, it’s a good time to lock in your trip.
So, Where Exactly Is Argentina?
Argentina stretches up the east side of South America. It’s bordered by Chile on the west and runs all the way down to the southern tip of the continent.
“It’s not quite as big as Australia, but it’s still huge,” says David. “The climate and landscape are incredibly diverse, from glaciers and deserts to forests and lakes.”
Start in Buenos Aires
If you’re flying in, chances are you’ll land in Buenos Aires.
“I’m not a city person,” David admits, “but if there’s one city I could live in, it’s Buenos Aires.”
Why? It’s alive with culture, energy and charm.
“You can get lost in the streets, turn left or right and discover something beautiful. There’s history, stunning architecture, and yes tango dancers performing in the streets.”
Sip a coffee in a local café and watch the world go by. It’s that kind of city.
Don’t Miss Iguazu Falls
“Iguazu Falls isn’t just one waterfall,” says David. “There are 270 cascading falls spread across three kilometres!”
They’re taller than Niagara and wider than Victoria Falls. Enough said.
Off the Beaten Track
For those wanting to escape the crowds, David recommends a few hidden gems:
- Northern Argentina: Near Bolivia and Chile, this rugged region is packed with colourful mountains and salt flats. “It still feels wild and untouched,” he says.
- Bariloche: Known for its Swiss-like charm, this area has turquoise lakes and snow-capped mountains. “It’s breathtaking,” says David.
- Mendoza: Love wine? This is your spot. “It’s the perfect place to unwind and soak up Argentina’s natural beauty.”
Let’s Talk Food
If you’re a meat lover, you’re in luck.
“Argentina is famous for its asado, a traditional barbecue where meat is cooked over an open flame,” David shares. “You’ll often see it displayed in café windows.”
Steak houses are rustic and full of character. “They’ve got wooden beams, leather seats, and the smell of charcoal in the air. It’s an experience.”
What If You’re Not Into Meat?
Don’t worry, there are options.
“Empanadas are probably the next biggest thing,” says David. “They’re like small savoury pastries filled with veggies, cheese, or meat.”
While Argentina isn’t exactly known for tacos or tortillas, lighter meals and veggie-friendly dishes are available too.
Final Word
Whether you’re drawn in by tango, towering waterfalls or tasty steak, Argentina offers an unforgettable mix of culture and adventure.
As David puts it: “It’s one of those places where you go once and can’t wait to go back.”
