Have you ever caught yourself overthinking a mistake, replaying it again and again in your mind? I know I have. The power of your thoughts is incredible, but can be incredibly positive, or incredibly negative!

A few weeks ago, I had one of those moments. I was feeling good after chatting with a young person from my school. Then, I turned to the woman behind him, assuming she was his mum. I introduced myself as the school chaplain, expecting a warm response. Instead, she gave me a puzzled look and said, “Good for you.” It hit me—she wasn’t his mum. Just a random lady. I felt so dumb. That moment haunted me, especially at night.

That’s why Philippians 4:8 is so powerful. The Apostle Paul tells us: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

This verse is a game-changer. It reminds us that we have the power to choose our thoughts. Scientists even have a word for it—metacognition—thinking about our thinking. We don’t have to let negative thoughts control us. Instead, we can decide what rules our minds.

So, what rules yours? Is it fear, regret, or the negativity in the news? When we dwell on these things, they consume us. But what if we shifted our focus? Imagine thinking about the ways God has blessed you. Remember how He has helped you, saved you, and shown His love.

Consider your family, your health, and your opportunities. This shift in mindset can transform your well-being. And it’s not just biblical wisdom—it’s backed by science.

One helpful trick is replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. When you watch something scary, you might put on a lighthearted Disney movie to reset your mood. The same principle applies to our thoughts. Overcoming dysfunction starts with focusing on what brings life.

So today, take control of your thoughts. Choose to fill your mind with what is good, pure, and uplifting. Because what you focus on will fill you.
