This Christmas season, Sonshine reached out to you, our Sonshine family, through our Helping Hands promotion, giving away Christmas hampers to those in need. We received dozens of entries, and narrowing it down to just two winners was almost impossible. Among the winners was a remarkable family whose journey has touched the hearts of many: Andrew and Nicole Jamieson, parents to three children, including their brave son Toby. They received their hamper last week, when it was delivered by Sonshine’s drive team, Bec & Asa.

They were nominated by Andrew’s mum Jean, who told us that her grandson Toby, who recently celebrated his 10th birthday, is the only child in Western Australia diagnosed with Cockayne syndrome, a rare and terminal genetic disorder that causes rapid aging and progressive deterioration of the body and brain. Often described as “childhood dementia,” this condition brings unique challenges that few families can fully comprehend. Across Australia, only seven cases of Cockayne syndrome are known, making the Jamieson family’s experience incredibly isolating.

Despite these obstacles, Toby is a child who has an incredible a zest for life, loves fast cars and heavy machinery, and is adventurous and curious. However, his daily life is shaped by constant medical care, therapies, and appointments that require his mother, Nicole, to be his full-time caregiver.

A Family’s Struggles

The Jamieson family’s resilience shines through their circumstances, but their journey has been filled with hardships. Toby’s illness has placed a financial and emotional toll on the family, with Nicole and Andrew struggling to keep up with their mortgage, while an annual trip to England for the Amy and Friends Cockayne syndrome conference adds further strain. These trips are vital, as they provide the family with cutting-edge knowledge about Toby’s condition. Nicole, often acting as both mother and medical advocate, shares the information she learns overseas with local doctors, bridging a crucial gap in Toby’s care.

A Helping Hand

The Jamiesons’ story is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of community. By awarding the family the simple gift of a Christmas hamper, Sonshine’s Helping Hands initiative has offered a moment of relief in their challenging journey. For Andrew, Nicole, Toby, Mabel, and Noah, this gesture represents more than just material support—it’s a reminder that their community sees them, values their strength, and is ready to help.

As Toby continues to inspire those around him, his story reminds us all of the importance of compassion and the profound impact of lending a helping hand to those in need.
