The WA Goldfields are roaring back to life with a nostalgic twist. The Red Dust Revival at Lake Perkolilli is bringing pre-World War Two racing machines back onto the track.

“This event gives a blast from the past,” said Ash Trow from Variety Goldfields. “You see classic cars and motorbikes where racing first began.”

A Track Steeped in History

Lake Perkolilli sits 45 minutes from Kalgoorlie. Its flat clay pan became a racing ground in 1914. Cars and bikes from across Australia thundered around the 3.2km circuit, attracting thousands of spectators.

“It surprises me that people still rebuild these machines,” Ash explained. “Then they get to race them in a truly unique way.”

The Revival of Red Dust

Racing paused during World War Two. Decades later, the Vintage Car Club reignited the tradition. After a trial event in 2014, Red Dust Revival officially returned in 2019.

By 2022, entries doubled. Now, in 2025, more than 140 cars and 40 bikes are confirmed. “This event is here to stay,” said Ash.

A One-of-a-Kind Spectator Experience

For $15 a day, spectators get racing, camping, food stalls, and even helicopter tours. But the real magic is the dust. “When cars fly past, you get covered in red dust,” Ash laughed. “It makes you feel part of the race.”

The event also recreates the past. Officials wear lab coats and vintage hats. Drivers don goggles, leather helmets, and old-style race suits. “The history these guys put into it is amazing,” Ash said.

Giving Back to the Community

Red Dust Revival isn’t just about motorsport. Variety Goldfields helps run the event, with all proceeds supporting local kids through the Variety charity.

“Every dollar goes back to Variety,” Ash explained. “It supports children and strengthens the Kalgoorlie community.”

Tickets are available online via Eventbrite or at the gate. Listen to Ash’s full conversation with Doug on Table Talk below.
