Perth has been hit with unpredictable weather this September, swinging from icy winds to sunshine. Jess from the Bureau of Meteorology joined Tim to explain why.
Why Spring Feels So Chaotic
“It is officially crazy weather here in Perth,” Tim said, asking Jess what’s going on.
Jess explained that September is a “flip-flopping season.” The city is transitioning from winter’s cold fronts into the warmer, drier summer pattern.
“So what we’re going to do is we’re going to flip and flop between those two,” Jess said.
Blustery Weekend Brings Damage
Over the weekend, Perth copped a wintery front with powerful winds. “Some reports of some damage [came] through parts of the metro area,” Jess noted. The gusts were joined by heavy rainfall and temperatures that felt much colder than the forecast.
The city only reached 17°C, but the wind chill meant it felt closer to 10°C. “Heading outside to grab some lunch, you’re going to want to still take your jacket with you,” Jess warned.
Relief on the Horizon
Thankfully, things are looking brighter. “There is another little cold front midweek, definitely nowhere near as dramatic,” Jess explained.
The good news? Perth can expect a stunning weekend ahead. “Get your sunscreen out. 23 and sunny on Saturday and then 26 and sunny on Sunday.”
The announcement brought instant relief. “I already feel better just hearing that,” one host said.
What’s Ahead for September and Spring
So, what about the rest of September? Jess is optimistic but cautious. “I’m not going to rule out completely the chance of a few more showers and maybe the odd little cold day,” she said.
However, she reassured listeners that hotter, drier days will soon become more common. “We are looking at continuing that trend of perhaps slightly warmer than normal temperatures,” Jess added.
Summer Outlook Still Unclear
When asked if the current weather gives clues about summer, Jess was careful not to jump ahead. “Too early to talk about summer just yet,” she said. But spring is tracking toward warmer and drier conditions overall.
For now, Perth locals can look forward to shedding their jackets at least for this week.
