Adrian Munro, CEO of Richmind WA, shares valuable insights into the importance of reflecting on our lives without dwelling in the past. He explains the need to balance looking back occasionally to learn growth lessons while avoiding getting stuck or defining ourselves by our mistakes.
Adrian illustrates this with a story from his cricket days, when despite a rainy, difficult game, his team debated whether to review their performance. Some saw it as a one-off, but Adrian believed in reviewing to build grit and resilience. He notes many people, like his cricket team, tend to move on too quickly when things go wrong, missing the opportunity to grow. The goal isn’t to dwell on errors but to find a healthy balance for learning and improvement.
Reflecting can be challenging because mistakes often feel like personal failures. Adrian reminds us to shift perspective by reviewing our words, thoughts, and behaviours as opportunities for growth, not condemnation. Life is a learning process, and adopting a growth mindset helps us improve without harsh self-judgment. Social interactions, although complex, offer continual opportunities to practice and better ourselves.
Adrian introduces the concept of the “shadow self”—the part of us that under pressure or stress behaves differently than usual, sometimes destructively. For example, someone might say or do hurtful things during stressful moments, even if 99% of the time they are kind and supportive. Recognizing when we are in our shadow self is critical. We need to develop the skill to pause and take control before harmful behaviours take over.
When reflecting, consider these questions:
- What triggers emotional reactions in me?
- How can I choose to behave differently rather than blame others?
The purpose of reviewing our past isn’t to label ourselves as failures but to take responsibility and learn lessons that help avoid repeating mistakes. By focusing on growth and self-awareness, we can move forward positively without being weighed down by past errors.
