Pastor Andrew “Hammo” Hamilton caught up with Leah and Morro recently, to share his advice on voting in this Saturday’s federal election. Read his insights below.

This morning, I woke up thinking, I’d love to tell everyone how to vote on Saturday.

I know, I know. A few weeks ago, I shared something similar on Twitter. It didn’t go so well. People were asking, “Who are you to tell me how to vote?”

But I’m not here to tell you who to vote for. I’m here to share how to approach your vote.

I was thinking back to when the UK left the EU. The most Googled question the day after the vote was, “What is the EU?” It’s crazy, right? People did their homework after the assignment was due.

Please don’t do that this weekend. Do your homework before you vote.

Here’s my advice.

Find the party that best aligns with the values of Jesus. You won’t find a perfect match. That’s okay. Just look for the one that reflects the Kingdom of God as described in the Bible. A great place to start? Read the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7). Look at what matters to Jesus. Then choose the party that, in your judgment, lines up closest.

Pray. Read. Discuss. Talking with others is powerful. I know it can feel awkward sometimes. But listening to different views can challenge and sharpen your thinking. We all grew up with certain ideas. Honest conversations help us see beyond them.

Live in peace with others, no matter the outcome. We won’t all vote the same way. We don’t all have to think the same way. Once the votes are counted, we need to keep living together with respect and unity.

And please don’t just copy what Mum and Dad say. Think for yourself. Pray for wisdom. Make your vote count.
