Pastor Andrew “Hammo” Hamilton caught up with Leah and Dan recently, to talk about how we can share our faith in an honest and authentic way. Read his insights below.
Back in 2003, I set out with a group of friends to plant a church in Butler. We were full of energy, convinced we would lead many people to faith.
But in a twist I never expected, I was the one who ended up having a conversion experience, just not the kind you might think.
A Surprising Revelation
It wasn’t my faith that changed that year. It was my coffee.
For most of my life, I drank instant coffee, five, six, sometimes even eight cups a day. I thought that was just what coffee was. Then, one evening, a friend invited me over.
“Let me show you something,” he said.
He took out some green coffee beans he had ordered online and roasted them right in front of me. Then, he ground them, brewed a cup, and handed it to me.
I took a sip.
“That’s coffee,” I said, stunned.
Holy cow. What had I been drinking all these years?
The Power of Experience
From that day forward, I never drank instant coffee again. But this moment also taught me something deeper, something about faith.
Sometimes, we think sharing Jesus means delivering long, complicated speeches. But maybe, just like my experience with coffee, people need to see and taste something real.
If they witness the reality of Jesus in our lives, they might stop and think, What have I been doing?
Living Your Faith
We may not have planted a wildly successful church that year, but I walked away with two things: a love for good coffee and a lesson in evangelism.
If you feel pressure to have all the right words when sharing your faith, take the weight off. Instead, live in such a way that when people see your life, they say, Wow, I’ll have that.
