Bec and Asa sat down with Pastor Ben McDonald from Centrepoint Church to unpack what it truly means to depend on God. From practical insights to biblical truth, they explore whether dependence is passive or active and how to recognise when we’ve started to rely on our own strength instead of His.
Whether you’re waiting for direction or stepping out in faith, this honest conversation will inspire you to trust God more deeply and walk with confidence in every season.
What Does It Mean to Be Dependent on God?
“It’s quite simply to trust Him,” he said. “The Bible says to trust God with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
Pastor Ben explained it using a picture: “When we lean on our own strength, we fall. But when we lean on God, we fall into His arms.”
How Do You Actually Lean on God?
It’s one thing to say trust God, but what does that look like day to day? Pastor Ben was honest: “Half the time, I don’t know what I’m doing. But He knows what He’s doing.”
Prayer plays a big role. “I’ve had to learn to release my anxieties and worries in those moments of prayer. Prayer is where you can complain and actually get answers.”
Is Trusting God Passive or Active?
It’s a mix of both. “We see people in the Bible being active and dependent like David with Goliath. But Isaiah says, ‘Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength.’ So sometimes, we’re called to act. Other times, we wait.”
Ben encouraged people to look at their own season and ask: “What do I need to be doing and what do I need to be waiting on?”
What If God Feels Distant?
How do you depend on God when He’s not physically there? Ben agreed it’s not always easy. “There’s definitely tension. I get up, go to work, and make my own decisions. But I also try to ask, ‘God, what do you want me to do today?’ Even in the ordinary.”
That mindset can change everything. “We still make our feet move,” Asa added, “but we do it with the awareness that God is with us.”
