This morning, Leah and Dan welcomed a very special guest, Dave Adamson. He’s the Australian Director of YouVersion, also known to many as the Bible App.

From an Airport Line to a Global Movement

The Bible App began in 2008 with one pastor in Oklahoma. Standing in a long airport security line, he wanted a digital way to read the Bible.

“He created this app,” Dave explained. “It was one of the first 100 apps on the App Store. After one weekend, there were 83,000 downloads.”

Today, that number has exploded. In November, YouVersion will hit one billion installs worldwide!

The Bible App in Australia

In Australia, the Bible App has been downloaded 6.9 million times. Even more remarkable, it’s downloaded once every 48 seconds. “By the time we finish this conversation, at least two more people will have downloaded it,” Dave said.

Why the surge? People are looking for more than endless scrolling. “We’re drowning in content but starving for wisdom,” Dave shared.

Searching for Hope and Purpose

One surprising trend is how people find the app. Many don’t search for “Bible.” Instead, they type in words like hope, purpose, or anxiety.

“When somebody types in fear or hope, YouVersion pops up,” Dave said. “We want to meet people right there.”

The Bible App now joins giants like Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp in reaching billions.

Gen Z Is Leaning In

Despite stereotypes, young people are turning toward faith. A study from Deakin and Monash Universities found 85% of Gen Z hold positive views of Christianity.

“Bible sales are up 80% in Europe and the US,” Dave added. “That matches what we’re seeing in app downloads. There’s a spiritual hunger among Gen Z.”

The Digital Public Square

Why does this matter? Because people aren’t just looking in churches anymore. “Australians tap and swipe their phones 2,600 times every day,” Dave said. “That’s the public square now.”

Apps like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and the Bible App are where people gather. Dave encouraged churches to see social media as ministry.

“Don’t just hand the Instagram account to the youngest person,” he warned. “You need strategy. Otherwise, your message gets lost in the scroll.”

Features You Might Not Know

So what’s a hidden gem in the Bible App? Dave shared two. First, every church already has a page. Leaders can claim it, update it, and disciple people all week long.

Second, the app can read Scripture aloud. “People tell me listening isn’t reading, but Scripture says faith comes by hearing.”

One Billion and Counting

With one billion downloads just around the corner, the Bible App continues to transform lives.

“People are searching for answers,” Dave said. “We believe the Bible makes your life better and makes you better at life.”
