Children’s author and teacher Simone Field is back with her second book. Following the success of Isabel and the Lunchbox Bully, she now introduces readers to Sasha and the Scary Spotlight. She joined Bec and Asa to tell us all about it.

From the Classroom to the Page

With 20 years of teaching experience, Simone has seen firsthand the challenges children face. “I have seen an increase in kids dealing with anxiety,” she explained. “Teaching kids strategies early can help prevent it going a bit worse when they’re older.”

Her background in psychology and her personal journey with anxiety also shaped the story. Simone even sought guidance from a trauma counsellor to ensure her book offered realistic support.

Tackling Childhood Anxiety

The new book follows Sasha, a friend of Isabel, who struggles with social anxiety. She avoids speaking in class, fears making friends, and wrestles with self-doubt.

Simone wanted the story to reflect real struggles. “Each book for me is a ministry opportunity,” she said. “I want kids to know they are not alone…that God is always there, ready to help them.”

She also highlights the role of families. “Families are a resource that God has given children,” she added.

Courage in the Spotlight

When asked what advice Sasha might give to children, Field replied: “Take a deep breath, look around you, let the breath out slowly and know that there will be friends and family around you who can help you.” That simple reminder encourages children to face fear with courage and trust.

What’s Next?

Writing the first book was the hardest step for Simone. But once it was published, her creativity flowed. She wrote Sasha and the Scary Spotlight in just five months and has already finished the third book in the series, due next year.
