Hearing God’s voice can feel confusing, especially if you’re not sure what to listen for. But according to Pastor Ash Hall, from Oceans Church, it’s not about following a strict formula. It’s about relationship. She joined Bec and Asa to share how people can hear God’s voice in their daily lives.
God Speaks in Different Ways
“One of the cool things about God is that He has so many different ways of speaking to us. Because He’s designed us so uniquely and so different.”
Ash compared it to being in a classroom. Not every student learns the same way. Some are visual learners, others need to get hands-on.
“For me, when a teacher was just writing or talking, I didn’t get it. But when I saw something done in front of me, it would click.”
Everyone hears God differently, because everyone receives differently. “There’s not one right way to hear Him,” said Ash. “It’s just finding out which way works best for you.”
The Bible Is a Key Voice
While God may use different methods, His word remains a constant.
“To be able to hear God’s voice, you have to know His voice,” said Ash. “One of the primary ways He does speak to us is through the Bible.”
If you don’t know what God sounds like through Scripture, it’s easy to get confused.
“Otherwise, you don’t know if you’re discerning God’s voice, your own thoughts, or even the enemy’s voice.”
Ash gave a simple comparison: “It’s like picking up the phone and someone says, ‘Hey, I’m your mum.’ But if they don’t sound like her, and say things she wouldn’t, you know it’s not her.”
How Do You Know It’s God?
It can be tricky, especially for those who aren’t familiar with Christianity. God’s voice doesn’t always come as a booming declaration. Sometimes, it’s more like a whisper or a gentle prompt.
“The way to discern that is by checking if it lines up with the Bible,” said Ash. “And also through community, talk to trusted leaders and pastors.”
Sometimes, God speaks through other people too.
It Looks Different in Each Season
Hearing God’s voice doesn’t always mean quiet time with a coffee and open Bible. That might work in one season, but not all.
“As a mum of two toddlers, I don’t get those quiet moments anymore,” said Ash. “Some of my most powerful God moments now come when I’m folding laundry with worship music in my headphones.”
God meets you right where you are.
Why Does God Want to Speak to Us?
It’s a great question, nd one that Pastor Ash says points to God’s heart.
“He’s a God of relationship,” she said. “He wants to know us deeply and intimately and for us to know Him the same way.”
It’s like any healthy relationship. You talk. You listen. You grow.
“God wants to help us find our purpose and sense of belonging,” said Ash. “Not just through Him, but through community too.”
So if you’ve ever wondered whether God speaks or if you’re hearing Him right know this: He’s already speaking. The key is learning how to tune in.
And He’ll meet you right where you are.
