In the middle of global uncertainty and personal hardship, Hopeful. was born, not just as a band, but as a declaration. With their bold alt-rock sound and redemptive message, this band is shining light into dark places, and at the heart of it all is lead vocalist and songwriter, Randy James.

Chatting with Leah & Dan on this week, Randy brought both laughter and depth, mixing a few cheeky Aussie impressions with honest reflections on faith, family, and the power of music.

The Story Behind Hopeful. (Yes, with a Full Stop)

“We started the band in the middle of the pandemic,” Randy shared. “There was just so much uncertainty in the world. I was going through depression and anxiety… and God met me in a song. He reminded me that because of Jesus, there’s hope. End of story. Full stop.”

That simple but profound truth inspired the band name Hopeful. – a full stop punctuating the idea that hope isn’t a vague feeling. It’s a firm foundation.

Songs That Speak to the Soul

Their new EP Wild One features six powerful tracks, each with a unique story. Randy found it hard to pick a favourite, but three songs hold particularly personal meaning.

It’ll All Be Fine

This song touches on identity, generational pain, and God’s tender presence. “There’s a lyric that says, ‘Feels like I’m stuck in a night terror, but You whisper it’ll all be fine.’ My son’s struggled with night terrors since he was five, and that line came from imagining how God calms us… tenderly, patiently… through the storm.”

Chasing After God

Written for his adopted sister (now his daughter), Carly Ann Taylor, this song is a love letter to anyone who’s walked a hard road. “She came from a traumatic background, but now she sings on stage with us. It’s her redemption story… it’s our family’s story… it’s God’s story.”

Everything Is Better

This upbeat anthem was co-written with members of Colony House and Paramore, and celebrates the beauty of living in the centre of God’s will. “It was one of our first co-writes in Nashville,” Randy recalled. “And the vocals you hear? They’re from the day we wrote it, so it’s got this raw, real energy.”

From Worship to Rock Stages

Though Hopeful. has alt-rock energy, its roots are in worship. Randy and lead guitarist Hunter Jackson met during the pandemic through church connections and began writing together. The band grew organically, adding friends, fans, and even a drummer who messaged Randy on Instagram.

The newest addition, Rafael, a Brazilian guitarist Randy met at the gym, sealed his place in the band through talent and instant chemistry. “Everyone warned me not to hire someone hotter than me,” Randy joked. “But hey, we’re a Christian band, so I’m good with it.”

A Message for the Hurting

For those going through dark or uncertain seasons, Randy’s encouragement is simple but powerful:

“There’s a God who sees you, loves you, and looks past your past. Don’t lose hope, don’t lose heart, keep chasing God. Seek first the Kingdom, and all else will be added.”

That message runs through every note, every lyric, every live show, and through the life of this band that’s lighting up the alt-rock world with faith and purpose.
