Music Teacher Sam Thomson and students Mia, Isaac, and Makayla from Rehoboth Christian College joined Doug on Table Talk. They spoke about the exciting new song writers competition being run at the school and shared some of the songs they’ve written and produced. You’ll be blown away by their talent.

Turning Lessons into Songs

This year, nine student bands from Years 10 to 12 each wrote and recorded a song. Their work is now available online. “We want to apply everything we learn in a practical way,” said Sam Thomson. “If we teach them something, it should make them better musicians.”

Stories Behind the Lyrics

Each band explored themes of faith, identity, and belonging.

Mia sang lead vocals on their song He Did It. “At first, I had no idea what to write about,” she admitted. “But in the end, we told the story of a Christian coming into a relationship with God. We want listeners to reflect on their own journey of finding faith.”

Makayla described writing the song Perfect People. “The meaning behind Perfect People is to try and reach out to the so-called perfect people of society,” said Makayla. “Letting them know they don’t have to confine themselves to this mould of a perfect lifestyle and seeking others approval.

From Dream to Reality

For many students, the project made their musical dreams feel real. “I always thought music would just stay a dream,” said Makayla. “But once it became a reality, I realised I could pursue it.”

“Music has always been a part of my life,” said Mia. “I would love to pursue music in the future being able to use my voice to worship God”

Isaac, a keyboard player, also reflected on the process. “Recording was a big learning curve. I learned a lot about how songs are mixed and pulled together.”

Learning More Than Music

The program is about more than talent. Students learn teamwork, perseverance, and faith through music. “It goes beyond skill and knowledge,” said Sam. “It taps into character formation. We want to shape lives for the gospel.”

The school has created a Spotify channel called Rehoboth Music Room. Each week, a new student composition is released for the public to enjoy.
