
Have you ever imagined a cosmic explosion so powerful that it outshines an entire galaxy? That’s exactly what gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are. Recently Bec and Asa were joined by astrophysicist Dr. Laura Dreissen to explore these incredible events and reveal the story behind the brightest GRB ever detected, nicknamed the BOAT – brightest of all time!
What Are Gamma Ray Bursts?
At first, GRBs might sound like candy, but they’re anything but sweet. Dr. Dreissen explained that gamma rays are the highest-frequency light in the universe. While they’re famous for turning Bruce Banner into the Hulk in movies, real gamma rays are extremely powerful and dangerous.
Gamma ray bursts occur when massive stars explode or when two neutron stars collide. “These bursts are directional, almost like a giant laser, rather than spreading light evenly in all directions,” Dr. Dreissen said. Thankfully, GRBs are always in distant galaxies, so our Milky Way has never been hit by one.
The Science Behind the Brightest Burst
The BOAT GRB demonstrated just how extreme these explosions can be. Some bursts can repeat multiple times in a single day, releasing more energy than our sun would emit in 20 trillion years. Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers could detect hydrogen in the burst’s light, allowing them to calculate its distance and confirm its extraordinary brightness.
Dr. Dreissen highlighted that studying these bursts not only measures their power but also reveals details about the life and death of massive stars. Larger stars burn through their fuel quickly, leading to shorter lifespans and dramatic supernova explosions at the end of their lives.
Why GRBs Matter to Us
Beyond their spectacle, GRBs play a critical role in creating the elements we find around us. “Explosions like these compress atoms together, forming the chemicals that make up planets, people, and everything in between,” Dr. Dreissen explained.
So, while they’re distant and potentially destructive, gamma ray bursts contribute to the very building blocks of our universe. By studying them, scientists can better understand stellar evolution, cosmic chemistry, and the extreme physics that govern our universe.

Although we’ve learned a lot about GRBs, Dr. Dreissen hinted that there’s still much more to uncover. Each burst provides a glimpse into the incredible power and complexity of space, reminding us that the universe is far more dynamic than it may appear from our tiny vantage point on Earth.
