Mark 9:50 “Salt is good. But if it loses its salty taste, you can’t make it good again. So, don’t lose that good quality of salt you have. And live in peace with each other.”
Listen: Salt That Loses its FlavourSalt is something that most of us use daily to add flavour to otherwise bland food or to enhance even the most delicious dishes. Despite its importance, the importance of salt in the Bible is something we rarely consider.
Historically, salt was likely more valuable than gold, but today, it’s a cheap commodity. If someone slipped tasteless white powder into your saltshaker, how would you react? You’d likely throw it out, which underscores the point Jesus makes in Mark 9:50:
“Salt is good. But if it loses its salty taste, you can’t make it good again. So, don’t lose that good quality of salt you have. And live in peace with each other.”
In this verse, Jesus draws a powerful parallel between the rich qualities of salt and the life of His followers. Anyone who believes in Him and lives for Him has the Holy Spirit dwelling within them, giving us a unique dimension—a flavour—that we can add to the lives of others through sacrificial love, kindness, gentleness, wisdom, and humility. This richness goes beyond words, enhancing the spiritual significance of salt in our daily lives.
However, if we don’t allow Jesus to transform us into that person—doing those good things—then our faith in Him and His Spirit within us is as useless as tasteless white powder.
Remember, salt is good, but if it loses its salty taste, it can’t be made good again. So, let’s not lose that quality of salt we possess, and strive to live in peace with each other.
Friend, if you believe in Jesus, you are the salt He means to add to the lives of the lost and hurting in this world. Embrace your role and let your faith add richness to those around you.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
