Perth is set to celebrate one of its most anticipated cultural events, the annual Japanese Film Festival. Running from November 18th to 26th at Palace Cinemas Raine Square, the festival brings the latest films straight from Japan to local audiences. Bec and Asa spoke with Manisay Oudomvilay the festival’s programmer, to get the inside scoop.

A Variety of Films for Everyone

“The Japanese Film Festival brings the latest and greatest films straight from Japan,” Manisay explained. “This year, you can expect drama, thrillers, anime, comedy, and more. There’s something for everyone.”

Audiences can enjoy both mainstream releases and fresh films that have just debuted in Japan. “Most of these films are pretty new, and you won’t be able to see them anywhere else yet,” Manisay added.

All films are in Japanese but include English subtitles, making them accessible even for those unfamiliar with the language.

How Films Are Selected

Selecting films for the festival is a team effort. Manisay shared, “There’s a whole team who start by looking at what’s coming out in Japan. We pick films we personally want to see because we all love film.”

After initial selections, the team watches and narrows down the list to ensure audiences will enjoy the festival experience.

Planning Your Visit

For first-time attendees, Manisay advises, “Pick a few highlights and go from there. Many films have multiple screenings, so it’s possible to fit a lot into your schedule.”

The festival is hosted at a fully equipped cinema, so no need to bring chairs or snacks. “They will have popcorn there. Everything you need is already available,” Uttam said.

Sharing Japanese Culture

The Japanese Film Festival is more than just entertainment. It’s about cultural exchange. Manisay explained, “It’s run by the Japan Foundation, which aims to spread Japanese culture worldwide. We want Australians to experience the scope of Japanese cinema and culture.”
