Earlier this month, three typhoons swept through the Philippines in one week. Before recovery could begin, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck, followed by a volcanic eruption just hours later. “It’s like imagining an atomic bomb in a city,” said Ricky, from Compassion. “The devastation is massive.”

Entire communities were flattened. Roads became impassable. Over 70 lives were lost, and hundreds were injured. Thousands more were left homeless, most from impoverished areas already struggling to survive.

Compassion Steps In

While chaos unfolded, Compassion’s local church partners moved fast. They began assessing damage, delivering food, and distributing clean water. “We are doing immediate response delivering food, improved water, and hygiene supplies,” Ricky explained.

Many displaced families were given shelter in church buildings still structurally sound. Beyond physical needs, Compassion provided emotional support and trauma care. “You’ve lost homes and lives,” Ricky said, “but we’re here to assure you that you are not alone.”

Stories of Hope Amid Ruin

In the first few days, fear gripped communities. People refused to return home, even sleeping outside under plastic sheets in the rain. But the local churches became beacons of comfort and unity.

“One child said, ‘I have nowhere to go but God,’” Ricky shared. “He could say that because people embraced him and reminded him there’s still hope.”

This message of hope, rooted in compassion and faith, has guided every action on the ground. “We may not do everything,” Ricky reflected, “but at the very least, we know we are doing the right thing at the right time.”

How Australia Can Help

Filipino and Australian communities are already showing their solidarity. “We thank our Australian brothers and sisters who are praying for the Philippines,” said Ricky.

To help, Compassion has launched the Compassion Disaster Relief Fund. Donations go directly toward emergency food, clean water, temporary shelters, and post-disaster rehabilitation. “Your prayers and help mean the world,” Ricky said. “We’ll rebuild together.”
