For the first time ever, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast the Musical is lighting up the stage in Perth, and for local actress Shubshri Kandiah, who plays Belle, it’s a homecoming filled with excitement, nostalgia, and a touch of magic.

From Perth to the Stage and Back Again

Returning to Perth is a special moment for Shubshri as she hasn’t performed in Perth for six years. “It’s always very special to come back to Perth, especially bringing a show with me,” she shared. “I love feeling the support from friends, family, and the local community.”

Shubshri has performed in several Disney productions, including Aladdin, but Belle holds a special place in her heart. “She’s strong, warm, and doesn’t let herself get pushed around. That’s what I love about her,” she said.

The Disney Magic

Being part of the Disney family means working in an environment full of wonder and camaraderie. “The magic is incredible,” she said. “Hearing people leave the theatre talking about the Beast’s transformation reminds me how special it is to be part of this.”

Behind the scenes, the team is just as magical. For every performer on stage, there are three to four people backstage making it all happen. “It’s choreography in itself. A whole other show happening behind the curtain.”

Life on Tour

Performing eight shows a week shapes everything around it from social life, to exercise, and even rest. “It often feels like your whole life is the show while you’re doing it,” Shubshri admitted.

Rehearsals vary, with most cast members rehearsing at least twice a week on top of performances. Add in new cast members, publicity, and extra rehearsals, and it becomes clear this is no ordinary 9 to 5.

A Dream That Found Her

Surprisingly, Shubshri never dreamed of being a musical theatre lead as a child. “I just loved performing,” she said. “It all happened naturally, and I was lucky to land roles soon after graduating.”

She draws inspiration from her colleagues. “Many of the cast have so much experience. I’ve learned so much from working alongside them.”

Her favourite number? Without hesitation: Be Our Guest. “It’s everything you want in a big Broadway show tap dancing, a can-can line, pyrotechnics. It’s a crowd favourite and my favourite to perform.”

Final Curtain in Australia

The Perth season marks the final stop of the Australian tour. “It’s been a long time coming. This is it. Our last Australian stop,” she said.

As for what’s next? That remains a mystery. “You never really know as an actor. I just hope something good comes along.” One thing’s certain Shubshri’s heart is set on continuing to perform, learn, and fall in love with new roles.

Don’t Miss Out

Beauty and the Beast opens in Perth for a limited season. With dazzling performances, stunning sets, and unforgettable music, it’s a must-see event. “Now is the time,” Shubshri urged. “If you’ve ever wanted to see it, get in quickly.”
