Leader of the WA Liberal Party, Basil Zempilas, joined Tim for Radiothon 2025 and to share why Sonshine continues to matter to him and to Western Australia.
Sonshine as a Constant Presence
Zempilas believes Sonshine has played an important role for many families across the state. He said Sonshine feels like “a very consistent and constant presence in their lives” He explained that some listeners tune in every day, while others return during challenging times.
Moreover, he highlighted the value of having a source of comfort available at any moment. “Isn’t it magnificent that there is a service like this that exists in our community that when people need that voice of reassurance or that helping hand that Sonshine FM is there for them with the flick of a button. I think that’s been a really powerful thing about Sonshine. Its there all the time buts it especially there when you need it.”
Finding Connection in Media
Zempilas began his media journey as a young cadet. He described discovering a natural fit in journalism and broadcasting. “I felt a real connection. I felt like this is a very comfortable environment for me.” Even after decades in various roles, he noted a common theme: every job centred on connecting with people. “All of them… are about connecting with people.”
A Career Built on Helping Others
Zempilas reflected on his long involvement with Telethon. He said West Australians consistently amaze him with their generosity. “When we turn our minds to something we are often the best in the world.” He drew a clear link between Telethon and Radiothon. Both create opportunities for people to support others and strengthen the community.
Why Giving Matters
Zempilas encouraged listeners to think about their own tough moments. “We’ve all had moments when things aren’t going well and we need someone or something to help us along. If you can think of one, then that means other people listening have had moments like that or are going through that right now.”
He reminded listeners that many people experience hardship right now. “A quick phone call can help make all the difference. Every donation over $2 can make a huge difference.”
