Pastor Shaphan Williams joined Bec and Asa on Drive to talk about our security in God. Many of us rely on our own strength, and the world gives us plenty to worry about, but knowing where we can turn in uncertainty will give us the security we need.

A Fearful World

“The world is full of a lot of fear with high interest rates and everything that’s going on in the world around us. But the question is, where do we get our actual security from?” began Pastor Shaphan.

He shared that due to the recent passing of his mother, he was reminded of the security he had in his home growing up. His family shaped the health of his future relationships. He said when people come from a healthy family, they feel internally strong. When they come from a broken family, they can feel a bit depleted.

Family Life

“I had a mix of both a healthy family and a broken family,” he said. “I had a great secure family growing up, but then that fell apart when I was 15 years old when dad left our family.”

This caused Shaphan to feel insecure and carry an internal struggle.

“But the good news is that all of us have access to security in God, no matter what your family background is.”

Access to Security

Through Jesus, all of us have access to security in our relationship with God.

Shaphan drew from Romans 8:

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children.

Adopted by the Father

“And so for me, with a family background, I’m grateful for parts of it. Parts of it have been challenging, but for me, I have my ultimate security, knowing that the God of the universe is my dad. He’s my father, and I have ultimate security and trust in him.”

Shaphan talked about the rise in housing costs and how that can cause stress and it is a reminder that often things can be out of our control.

“But my ultimate security is found in God.”

Instead of using God as a back-up plan when things don’t go as planned, we can and should make him the ultimate source of our security and invest hope in him.

Do Not Worry

“Jesus says, don’t worry about money and where you’re going to get this and that from because it dominates the minds of most of the world. But instead, seek God first.”

Sometimes children will troubleshoot and do everything within their power to fix a solution before they tell their parents, but we can put our full trust in God, says Pastor Shaphan.

Where Is Your Trust?

That word trust really is interchangeable with belief. It’s not just belief about God, but it’s actually trust in God.”

He used the illustration of a plane and our trust in its ability to fly. “The real test is when you actually board the plane and stake your life on it.”

“A lot of it comes down to where our mind goes. And sometimes we actually need to just stop our thinking and switch the direction of our thinking and put our trust in God.”

Pastor Shaphan said, we can still problem solve, work hard and act wisely with our finances, but it is the place we operate from.

“Do we do it from a place of fear and trusting and putting faith in our fear or putting trust and faith in our father?” he posed as a final question.
