Pastor Rob Furlong from Woodvale Baptist College joined Drive to talk about the film Project Hail Mary. It prompted the big question, “Are we alone in the universe”?
Rob began by talking about the significance of this film and how it has captured the hearts and minds of people around the world, particularly young adults.
Big Questions
Pastor Rob acknowledged Project Hail Mary for asking the big questions. At one point the film even brings up the existence of God.
“The question is asked, do you believe in him?” said Rob.
The major themes of this movie are redemption and sacrifice, as well as love, connection and relationships with each other.
“It looks at that whole issue of ‘am I alone in the world, in the universe?’
Are we Alone?
Pastor Rob posed this question once more.
“What the movie did for me was it highlighted the importance of connection and relationships and what it means to be human.”
Rob said that contrary to what the film suggests, it is not aliens out there, but something far greater.
A Need For Connection
“His name is God. Every one of us in our heart, the deepest longing in our heart is a need for friendship and relationship and connection with other people.”
He posed the question: Why is that deep need there?
“I think the only answer is that deep need for relationship and connection is there because God put it in our hearts and God put it in our hearts because he is a relational God and he is knowable.”
Rob had an encouragement for anyone doing it tough.
Encouragement for the Lonely
“Maybe you feel you’re alone, maybe you feel like no one cares, don’t you believe it? God is right there beside you. And maybe you don’t sense him at this moment, but I can assure you that he loves you. You’re not on your own. And he wants to have a relationship with you. He’s in relationship. He desires to be in relationship with you.”
Rob referenced the statement that Sonshine often uses: “You are deeply loved by the one who knows and loves you best. You’re not on your own. God is there reaching out to you.”
