The first railway workshops in WA were established in 1886. In 1904, they moved to Midland from Fremantle. They continued to operate in Midland for the next ninety years until they were closed under the Richard Court government in 1994. Now, in 2024 these historic workshops are open and thriving again!
The buildings have once more become a hive of activity, as well as a means of honoring an important part of WA history. This is happening with thanks due to the Machinery Preservation Club of WA Inc , Hand Tool Preservation Society of West Australia , Midland and Districts Historical Society Inc. and of course the WAUBRA – Country Women’s Association. And, most recently, the 1904 Blacksmith Artisans.
An opportunity to look around these historic buildings, to visit the workshop ,museum, see vintage engines cars & motor cycles working, join us for the historic machine display, see and Smell!! See the 360 hp diesel engine running for the first time since closure and hear the iconic workshop whistles tooting., examine scale model steam engines, and enjoy kids rides, drinks, ice-cream, live bands, and even a 1960s electric organ and BAG PIPES!.
Salubrious and sumptuous hot food will also be provided throughout the day in the 1904 Blacksmith Artisans workshop.
