ANZAC Day at ANZAC Cottage 2024

ANZAC Day at ANZAC Cottage 2024

ANZAC Cottage in Mount Hawthorn was built back in 1916 as an outpouring of respect and appreciation for those who fought at Gallipoli. This tribute to the armed forces had a double purpose: it served as a memorial, but also provided a home for a returned wounded soldier and his family. Those long-ago citizens contributed their meagre funds, materials and skills to this ambitious project, a brick and tile building constructed in just one day.

This emotion is reflected in the annual ANZAC Day commemorations at that memorial. The cottage will be open to the community on Thursday April 25, from 4 pm to 6 pm. Commemorations will include the Field of Remembrance, honouring the ancestors of community members, a children’s wearable art activity, and the annual visit from the remarkable Maori cultural group, Ngaru Pou, ensuring that the “NZ” in ANZAC is never forgotten.

The day will include as evocative sunset service at 5 pm, a community-based commemoration featuring the younger generation and their perspective on this significant day.

All are welcome to come together to commemorate those in the armed forces and their work to ensure ongoing safety and security, and to recognise the work of the generous volunteers over a century ago.

The Friends of ANZAC Cottage thank the Heritage Council of WA and The National Trust of Western Australia for their assistance that enables these annual commemorations to take place. For more information, please get in touch with Anne (details below).
