For Radiothon 2024, we were excited to welcome Western Australia’s Premier, The Honorable Roger Cook BA GradDipBus MBA MLA. Known for his leadership, athleticism, and dedication to community, Premier Cook brought, humour, and heartfelt insights to Radiothon, which aims to foster connection and hope.
Community Connection and Hope
Amid the lighthearted fun, the conversation turned to the deeper purpose of Radiothon: fostering connection and hope in the community. “What gives me hope,” Premier Cook reflected, “is the amazing people who surround me, helping me get through challenging times.” He credited his wife Carly and their now-adult children as key sources of perspective and support.
He emphasised that staying connected is vital for mental health and well-being. “Loneliness is a fundamental part of people feeling isolated,” he said. “We’ve increased spending on mental health by over 57%, supporting not only public services but also community organizations that bring people together.”
The Role of Community Radio
Community radio stations like Sonshine play an essential role in combating loneliness and building connections. “Radio comes into the room, and all of a sudden, you feel part of a community,” Premier Cook shared. “Podcasts and playlists are great, but they can’t replicate that one-on-one connection radio offers.”
He commended Sonshine’s efforts, saying, “This station is more than entertainment; it’s a lifeline for so many. It’s about belonging and well-being.”
Wrapping Up with a Call to Action
As Radiothon edged closer to its target, Premier Cook encouraged listeners to dig deep. “Let’s keep Sonshine FM thriving,” he urged. His parting words underscored the spirit of the event: “Community radio is connection. Let’s ensure it continues to bring hope and joy to everyone it touches.”
