As we approach the busy holiday season, many of us feel the weight of life’s pressures. Thankfully, Geoff Woodward from Metro Church joined us this week to share some encouragement and practical wisdom to keep us motivated. Here’s what he had to say:
Rejoicing Is a Choice
Geoff began by highlighting a verse many might recognise: “I will rejoice in the Lord.” He explained that this isn’t about life going perfectly or everything falling into place. Instead, it’s a deliberate decision to rejoice, regardless of circumstances.
“We often underestimate our willpower,” Geoff said. “People think, ‘I can’t withstand this temptation,’ or ‘I’m not strong enough,’ but if we keep going, the feeling often passes. The psalmist reminds us that rejoicing is not about how we feel; it’s about making a choice. That’s a willpower thing.”
Discipline Creates Habits
Geoff pointed out that this principle applies beyond rejoicing—it’s relevant to all areas of life. He referenced another verse that says, “Whatever you give yourself to eventually rules you,” noting this aligns with the law of habit.
“Whatever you continually practice, you’ll eventually do without even thinking,” Geoff explained. He acknowledged it’s hard to make good choices when emotions are pulling us in the opposite direction, but the more we practice, the easier it becomes.
He shared a famous quote from golfer Gary Player: “The harder I practice, the luckier I get.” Geoff emphasised that small, consistent actions build strength and discipline over time, whether it’s choosing joy, managing social media use, or starting a fitness routine.
Start Small, Lean Right
For those struggling to build willpower and better habits, Geoff offered simple advice: “Start, even if you don’t maintain it for as long as you want. None of us are machines. What matters is choosing a direction.”
He shared a revelation from Ecclesiastes: “If a tree falls to the north or the south, in the place where it falls, there it shall lie.” At first glance, it may seem puzzling, but Geoff explained, “Whatever direction you lean is where you’ll fall under pressure.”
By practising small, intentional disciplines daily—like limiting negative inputs or going for a walk—we build resilience. Geoff encouraged listeners to take charge of their choices, saying, “You’re not just practising behaviour; you’re practising control over your decisions.”
Final Encouragement
Life’s pressures might feel overwhelming, but Geoff reminded us that willpower grows with practice. “None of us get it right all the time,” he said. “But each step in the right direction strengthens us for the next.”
