Yesterday we received a call from Listener Sara who recently spent 17 months in prison. She described that in the first facility she was in, there was only a TV. As music is such an important part of her life, Sara really struggled with this, so when she was relocated to a Perth rehab prison, the first thing she did was buy a radio. As she hadn’t lived in Perth for such a long time, she had to refamiliarise herself with our city’s radio station. She hopped from station to station before it tuned into 98five.

At about the same time, Sara had just begun attending a church service inside the prison.

“I was starting to believe in things bigger than myself.”

The Brekky Show quickly became her favourite program, she loved the music and the conversation but what really stood out to her was the Lifewords.

“I really loved the bible verses. It’s funny how no matter where I am in my life, the things that I hear resonate with my daily life.”

Now we are a daily part of Sara’s life.

“I enjoy that it’s not repetitive, there is positivity, there is gratitude and always laughter. I don’t watch the news. I find it has a negative impact on me. But it’s really nice, especially in my journey away from a really destructive place, to be able to hear positivity and positive stories. It’s really benefited me.”

While Sara was in prison she made the decision to donate to good causes and 98five was one of those, she thought “yes, one day I’ll be able to donate to you guys!” and yesterday was that day. While driving Sara heard us talking about our June Appeal.

“So I donated this morning and it’s something that I will continue to do, even if it’s not as much as I’d like to give, I’d like to give and help and be a part of the community.”

Sara has been out of prison for 4 months now and she’s doing really well, she’s moved in with her sister and now the two of them listen to 98five together in the morning!

For over 30 years, we’ve been speaking life and hope into thousands of lives across Perth. There are people who are alive today, marriages still together, and people who still have their faith because of something they heard on this radio station and we’ve heard their stories. Imagine the stories we haven’t heard yet! But none of this would have been possible without people like Sara, without people like you. Together we can continue to make this sort of difference in the coming 12 months.
