In the world of music, there are artists who stand out not only for their talent but also for their determination and willingness to go above and beyond to make their dreams come true. One such artist is Sam McGovern, a rising sensation in the music industry, who joined us for his radio debut on Sonshine’s Brekky with Kirste and Dan. Sam shared insights about his journey, aspirations, and his pursuit of a life-changing opportunity to support Coldplay on their upcoming Perth shows.

Sam McGovern, who is a “bit of a TikTok sensation in the U.S.” according to Dan has one main goal; secure the support slot for Coldplay, an aspiration that he believes has the potential to change his life. He shares that he picked up the guitar at the age of five, a cherished memory that has transformed into a second language for him. He navigated through being the only boy in the school choir, facing challenges and bullies, which temporarily led him away from his passion for music. However, the turning point came when he rediscovered his inspiration after buying a John Mayer CD.

What stands out most in Sam’s story is his unwavering confidence and belief in himself. He expresses that he is his biggest supporter and states that “no one is going to believe in Sam McGovern as much as Sam McGovern will believe in Sam McGovern.” Sam has completed his official application via the online portal that was set up by Coldplay’s team. Each applicant must send in a song and a video of them performing live. But Sam isn’t going to leave it at that.

“You’ve got to do the things that no one else is willing to do”.

Local musician Sam McGovern won't stop until he's chosen as Coldplay's opening act

Sam has taken it upon himself to create his own guerilla marketing campaign, highjacking popular Perth spots to decorate in Sam-signage to spread his message across Perth. He planned to get into Optus Stadium to shoot some promotional pics, and even though he didn’t make it past security, after being thrown out he landed in the walkway of the Mayor of Perth, Basil Zempilas. While Basil couldn’t give him his official backing, he got some dynamite digital content out of the interaction.
