An ice cream shop in Auckland has sold out of its new salmon-flavoured ice cream just two weeks after serving it to customers.

Shop assistant Mushan says the owner came up with the idea to experiment with salmon ice cream after trialling it at their Japanese restaurant. “They wanted to incorporate more New Zealand ingredients and thought salmon and wasabi would be a good idea to try,” Mushan said.

They use real king salmon sourced from the South Island, which they order in bulk. Mushan says it has proved popular among customers as not many people have tried salmon in ice cream before. However, reactions to the fishy flavour are mixed online.

One person described the taste as ‘a creamy salmon dip but frozen, flaky and slightly sweet”.

Another person wrote “Yuck! Imagine the smell.

“I’m curious about the flavour but at the same time I don’t know if I would like it. But I’d like to give it a try if I can,” a third person added.
