Beloved Australian singer-songwriter Pete Murray has returned with a new single, Wouldn’t It Be Good. Over the years, Murray has sold over 1.2 million albums, earned hundreds of millions of streams, and released three ARIA chart-topping albums. With 17 ARIA Award nominations and numerous other wins, his impact on the Australian music scene is undeniable.

Pete is set to hit the road again with a summer tour, including performances in WA in January. Reflecting on his career, Pete shared insights into his musical beginnings, the evolution of his sound, and some unforgettable moments along the way.

A Surprising Start in Music

Despite his success, Pete Murray’s journey into music began unexpectedly. Originally passionate about sports and studying natural medicine, Murray didn’t consider a career in music until his early 20s.

I was always into athletics and footy,” Pete said, “I was planning to work with sportsmen and women. One day, a mate of mine mentioned he was getting a guitar, and that’s how I got started.” His journey from that moment has been nothing short of remarkable.

He also credits a pivotal experience during his time in London. “I was living with 19 Aussies in a two-bedroom flat, and a friend encouraged me to start writing my own songs. That changed my life forever.

From Feeler to Now

Pete’s debut album Feeler remains a classic, and fans have followed his musical evolution over the years. Reflecting on how his music has changed, Pete shared, “I try to keep things fresh. The new stuff has a vibe similar to my earlier acoustic roots. Some of these songs have been in the works since 2014.”

His new single, Wouldn’t It Be Good, almost didn’t make it onto the upcoming album, but fans are sure to be glad it did. “It’s a tricky song,” Pete admitted, “I wasn’t sure it would make the cut.”

Memorable Moments on Stage

When asked about memorable performances, Pete recalled one special moment from his early career. “The first time I sold out a show was in Sydney at Bar Broadway, with about 400 people. I remember arriving at the venue and seeing a massive line around the block. I thought they were there for another show, but it turned out they were all there for me.

During that performance, Pete played Ten Ft. Tall, a lesser-known track from Feeler, and the crowd sang every word back to him. “It wasn’t the biggest gig, but it was the first time I experienced that kind of connection with an audience.”
