Makeup can be a powerful tool for highlighting our best features, but knowing how to achieve a natural, radiant look can be challenging. Makeup Artist, Connor Adams, joined Johanne on Table Talk to share her professional tips and tricks, emphasising why a “less is more” approach often yields the best results.
Five Simple Steps for a Natural Glow
- Moisturiser: Moisturising your skin is essential for an all-day glow and helps your makeup apply smoothly. Remember to protect your skin with SPF as well.
- Primer: The right primer will ensure your makeup lasts all day.
- Foundation: Choose a light coverage foundation or tinted moisturiser to even out your skin tone.
- Bronzer and Blush: Bronzer can give you a healthy sun-kissed look. Add a pop of blush and a bit of highlighter to complete the look.
- Don’t Forget Mascara: Mascara can make your eyes pop and enhance the natural look.
Less is More
To avoid overdoing your makeup, Connor recommended starting with less and adding more as needed. “Stand back, look in the mirror from different angles, and assess if you need more colour.” Connor also highlighted the significance of natural light in makeup application. “Invest in a hand mirror if needed, and check your makeup in natural light to ensure even blending.“
Makeup Expires
Don’t forget that makeup products have expiration dates. “Liquid foundations are good for a year, cream blushes and highlighters for six to eight months, and mascara for three months,” she said. Even if you use makeup occasionally, it’s important to store it properly. “Keep your makeup in a cooler environment to extend its longevity,” Connor advised.
Tips for Tired Eyes
For dark circles and puffiness, Connor recommended a concealer with a peach undertone. “It colour-corrects dark circles and brightens your eyes.” For those struggling with panda eyes from smudged mascara and eyeliner, Connor suggested waterproof products. “Set your eyeliner with a dark eyeshadow to prevent transfer,” he says.
Invest in Makeup Brushes
Investing in good makeup brushes can also make a big difference. “Our fingers can only take us so far when we’re applying our makeup products. So if you invest in getting a foundation brush and eyeshadow blending brush that will help level up your makeup.“
