At some point, many of us have paused to ask ourselves: How can I be a good human being? It’s a question that goes beyond traditional education. We’re taught how to count, read, and write—but no one gives us a formal guide to becoming the best versions of ourselves. To explore this deeper, Professor Samuel Leong joined Jo on Table Talk to share his insights on what it means to be a good person and how we can continuously grow and improve.

The Power of Choice

Every day, we have the power to choose how we respond to life’s challenges. “When you wake up in the morning, you can decide if it’s going to be a good or bad day,” said Professor Leong. One simple way to make that choice is by starting with a positive mindset—deciding what you allow into your life, whether it’s joy or anger, and how you respond to challenges. “It’s not just about setting goals, it’s about managing your reactions to everyday struggles,” he explained. Too often, we slip into negative patterns, letting outside circumstances dictate our happiness.

How Do We Measure Self-Improvement?

How can we tell if we’re truly growing into better people? Professor Leong suggested using our personal idols or role models as benchmarks. “We admire others and try to emulate them,” he noted. However, it’s important not to chase outward success while ignoring inner struggles. “You can achieve great things and still be battling issues like depression or sleeplessness,” he added.

On a broader level, tools like the World Happiness Index and Global Security Index offer insights into societal well-being. For personal growth, though, Professor Leong recommended creating a personal happiness index—a way to track your emotional development and progress over time.

The Secrets to a Fulfilling Life

Professor Leong also shared his insights on living a truly fulfilling life. “The secret is to give, not grab,” he said, emphasising the value of generosity over material gain. He also underscored the importance of humility. “We all face contradictions and dilemmas. But many people are stuck living in the past or hoping for the future, without building the bridge of today.” Living in the present is essential for personal growth.

How to Be a Better Person

Professor Leong urged listeners to take an honest look at themselves. “We all have strengths and weaknesses. The key is to understand both and aim for a pure heart,” he said. He encouraged people to reflect on their motives and think about how they want to be remembered. Becoming a better person, he explained, is about making conscious choices, striving for kindness, and cultivating self-awareness in all areas of life. In a world filled with challenges and contradictions, the journey toward self-improvement begins with self-reflection and a willingness to grow. “We must aim, allow, and choose—every day—to be better,” he concluded.
