We were thrilled to welcome back Drea for a candid chat about life, music, and the journey of an independent artist. Her newest single, Riah promises to be a powerful anthem, and she graciously shared the inspiration behind it.

Riah is deeply personal, touching on her experiences with her hair. The title itself is a clever play on words, spelling hair backward. “It’s a story about my experiences with my hair. So if you have seen me on social media, you know that I have extensions in a lot of the time. And a few situations have come up in the past, as an adult, as a teenager, as a child, and before I could even talk to do with my hair.

But creating music isn’t just about lyrics and melodies; it’s a journey of self-discovery and collaboration. Drea opened up about her songwriting process, a departure from her usual routine, and the involvement of her family in her musical endeavours. “For me, this is actually the first time I’ve written a full song by myself. If you have seen me on social media, I am deliberately making this process of releasing the song very messy because it encapsulates the emotions around the song as well.”

Navigating the music industry as an independent artist isn’t without its challenges. Drea shared her struggles, saying, “Watching people get opportunities that I’ve worked very hard for…but in saying that, I know that everybody’s journey is different.” Yet, amidst the challenges, Drea remains hopeful and focused on her craft. She spoke passionately about her dream collaborations, not just for musical reasons but also for the opportunity to learn from others’ experiences. “Instead of just like working with them, I just want to sit down and talk to people because I want to gather from their experiences in the industry or in life in general.
