The festive season is getting a spectacular start with A Dickens of a Christmas, a unique play set to delight audiences on Friday, December 13, at the stunning St. George’s Cathedral in Perth. Bec and Asa spoke with Jenny Davis, the talented playwright and director behind the production, to learn about the magic and meaning of this beloved Christmas tradition.

For over 15 years, the community has been coming together to bring this annual Christmas play to life. Jenny shared that the event has become a cherished part of the holiday season for many attendees. “People come every year and say, ‘Now Christmas has begun!’ It’s become a bit of an institution,” she said.

A Unique Take on Dickens’ Classic

This year’s play offers a fresh perspective on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Inspired by a historical coincidence, Jenny reimagined what might have happened if Dickens had met Henry Cole, the man behind the first commercial Christmas card, in 1843—the same year A Christmas Carol was published.

The story weaves together themes of social justice, family life, and Dickens’ love for Christmas. It also highlights his passion for helping the less fortunate, a value deeply ingrained in his writing. “You’ll see Dickens as a man, a philanthropist, and a literary genius who loved Christmas,” Jenny explained.

A Multi-Sensory Experience

This year’s production promises more than just captivating storytelling. It’s a sensory feast, with performances by the Perth Undergraduate Choral Society, the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, and even a Ukrainian choir singing traditional Christmas music.

With a diverse cast ranging from ages 8 to 80, the play combines seasoned professionals with young, aspiring actors—all donating their time to make this magical evening a reality.

Adding to the enchantment is the venue itself. St. George’s Cathedral, beautifully lit for the season, creates an unforgettable atmosphere. “The way it’s lit up at Christmas is magical, and the music just fills your soul,” Jenny said.

Don’t Miss It!

Whether you’re drawn by the music, the talented cast, or the promise of a heartfelt story, A Dickens of a Christmas is an experience you won’t want to miss.
