Pastor Izzy, from Courageous Church, joined us to break down Romans 12:1. Romans 11 speaks about salvation through God’s mercy, not our deeds. Earlier chapters discuss salvation by grace through faith and emphasise that our relationship with God and eternal life are due to His mercy, not human effort.

Romans 12:1 says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”

Paul defines worship as more than a Sunday activity. It’s a lifestyle—how we live, treat others, and reflect Jesus both publicly and privately. Worship involves living holy, set-apart lives that make others notice something different about us.

Living as a “living sacrifice” is challenging. It requires us to prioritise God’s ways over our desires. But importantly, this lifestyle is a response to God’s mercy. We live for Jesus not out of duty but as a grateful response to His mercy. This perspective shift is crucial. Our commitment to God stems from recognising His mercy, making our service to Him a joy rather than a burden.

This mindset also guides our prayers. We should pray for God’s mercy on our family, nation, community, and workplaces. Living in response to God’s mercy transforms our efforts from jobs to joys. Serving Jesus becomes a source of joy when viewed through the lens of His mercy.
